Beautiful to see. I didn’t have nearly this many books (probably around 300 between my wife and I), but we lost all but about 8 in a house fire in July. I hate the pain of starting over, but seeing your space is inspiring!

This is what I'm in for at some point in the (I hope) not-too-distant future. I have more than 10,000 volumes and very little shelf space at this point. So: stacks. Lots and lots of stacks. I need a bigger house. You've given me a lot to think about with this. Thanks.

Loved this. We share deep love of books and music, including bookcases in multiple rooms, a personal system of organization, and the Steinway grand that animates the music in the space. My wife and I are contemplating a move back to Maine in the next year or two, and after this, I’ll be giving thought to retaining a structural engineer. Thank you.

What a great read! And I really get a sense of your relationship and history with your books.

Wow Ted! Your book fetish is heavy. I love the open library table, so much creative potential.

As a 20-year employee of an academic music library, I found this post delightful (and don't worry, we're taught in library school that the needs of the primary user group--i.e. you--should determine the cataloguing/shelving rules, so you can shelve them any way you like!)

Hi, Ted. I really love your article about moving your library, having gone through the same problem myself several times, I can relate to pretty much everything you said. And it really comes in handy mow that We had a flooding in my library room and my bookcases were damaged. My books are back in boxes and I need to buy new bookcases. I can use some of the advice on making a better plan than the ine I had. May I ask where did you buy your bookshelves? and if you have the actual model, so I can check the specs of width, height and depth because they look just perfect for my own needs. Congratulations on this achievement and thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm no scholar, but the line about needing to build your own research library strikes a chord--the kind of books I like are not the kind that you find in a public library or a Barnes & Noble, so I also sort of needed to build my own institution.

I love this from beginning to end. Congrats on this project -- the outcome is gorgeous (and enviable)!
